Jennifer Mercier, LPC

Welcome ~

Choosing counseling is an act of courage. Whether you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, heartbroken, or ready for something different, it can be deeply healing to have support from a trusted professional. Together, we can make space for insight, repair, and the kind of growth that fits your life.

I believe each person’s journey is sacred and uniquely their own. Life brings opportunities and challenges, and sometimes we need help to slow down, reflect honestly, and sort through thoughts and feelings in a safe place. I offer a warm, calm, non-judgmental space where you can explore what’s happening for you, so you can better understand where you’ve been, where you are now, and where you want to go next.

I take a collaborative, interactive approach. I value thoughtful reflection, practicality, and even humor, because healing doesn’t have to be humorless to be serious. I’ll bring compassion, support, and perspective, and we’ll work together to develop goals and strategies that match your needs. Our work may include identifying patterns that keep you stuck (thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and behaviors), and building new skills and ways of relating that help you feel more grounded, empowered, and connected.

Background

I graduated from Virginia Tech with a B.S. in Psychology and earned my M.S. from Radford University in Counseling and Human Development. Before starting private practice in 2012, I worked for several years providing crisis counseling to individuals experiencing acute mental health crises and/or difficult life transitions.

Who I work with

I work with adults, both individuals and couples.  I mainly provide telehealth therapy, but also have limited availability for in-person sessions.

Areas of focus

- Life change and crisis

- Depression

- Anxiety

- Grief and Loss

- Self-esteem and confidence

- LGBTQ+ affirming therapy (identity, relationships, stress, transition-related concerns)

- Relationship concerns (communication, conflict, trust, intimacy)

- Non-monogamy and consensual relationship styles

- People navigating spiritual or religious questioning, or non-traditional beliefs

LGBTQ+ and consensual relationship diversity

When you come to counseling, you deserve to feel safe, seen, and affirmed. Whether you’re out, questioning, transitioning, exploring, or still figuring things out, I create a supportive environment where you can discuss your sexual and/or gender identity, and the realities of your life, without criticism or judgment.

If you’re navigating a consensual relationship that’s outside the “traditional” script, it can be especially important to find a counselor who understands that these dynamics are complex and can be healthy when they’re consensual, values-aligned, and responsibly managed. I support individuals and couples in exploring and strengthening their relationships, including polyamory and other non-monogamous structures.

I’m familiar with and welcoming of a wide range of consensual relationship styles and practices, including polyamory, polyfidelity, swinging, kink/fetish, and BDSM. If you want support with communication, boundaries, negotiation, attachment needs, jealousy management, stigma-related stress, or integrating relationship values into everyday life, I’m here to help.
