Jennifer Mercier, LPC

Welcome ~

Considering counseling is a courageous and oftentimes difficult decision, but sometimes we know deep inside that it is time to try something new. A trusted counselor can assist you on your journey of self-discovery with guidance to deeper self-awareness, acceptance, and caring support during your healing and growth.

I believe that our journey through life is sacred, and each day brings the gift of opportunity. We all face struggles and difficult decisions, and sometimes we need to ask for help, for honest reflection, and for a safe place to sort through our thoughts and feelings as we heal and grow. I am here to provide a welcoming, calming, and non-judgmental space for you to explore where you are, understand where you have been, and discover where you want to be. I am interactive and responsive. I value reflection, intellect, and humor as crucial parts of our work together. I will provide compassion, support, new perspectives, and tools for change. I think therapy is a collaborative process, and we will work together to develop a plan for making the changes you desire and reaching your goals. We will identify and change self-defeating thoughts, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors in order to help you live a healthier life.

I graduated from Virginia Tech with a B.S. in Psychology and I earned my M.S. from Radford University in Counseling and Human Development. Before working in private practice, I worked for several years providing crisis counseling for clients with mental illness who were experiencing an acute crisis or challenging life transition.

I work with adults, both individuals and couples, and I specialize in the following areas:

  • Grief and Loss

  • LGBTQ-Related Matters

  • Life Change and Crisis

  • Depression

  • Anxiety Disorders

  • Mood Disorders

  • Self-esteem Struggles

  • Relationship Problems

  • Alternative Lifestyles

  • Non-traditional Spiritual/Religious Views

LGBTQ and Alternative Lifestyles

Whether you are out-and-proud, confused-and-questioning, or somewhere in-between, when you come to me for counseling, you will find a safe, supportive, affirming environment where you can be open about all aspects of your sexual and/or gender identity without criticism or judgment.

If you live an alternative lifestyle, it can be hard to find a counselor who understands where you’re coming from. All consensual relationships are welcome and I don’t discriminate against any relationship style or practice among consenting adults. I am familiar with polyamory, polyfidelity, swinging, fetish, kink, and BDSM. I’m open to learning about more.
